When involved in the 1 year old hail claims in Minneapolis several years ago I worked with Covenant Builders; these guys would lift the shingle tabs and then lay them back down on a 12" trowel. Then they would get on a plane (lay on the roof) with the shingle, observe and photo the damage. I swear you could not see the damage in any light setting when standing on the roof, but when the tabs were layed on a flat surface the "dents" were very observable.

(After Covenant Builders called for reinspection on a large apartment complex)

The age and color of a shingle have a lot to do with finding hail damage, and All carriers want the magic chalk lines. If I were in your situation I would replace the roof and explain the situation. A building owner is not going to accept being paid for one roof and not the other especially if there is collateral damage to siding & gutters. Talk to your supervisor and take his or hers recommendation. Hail can make you pull your hair out!!!

I have looked at 2 buildings next to each other for hail damage. The 70 square building has very obvious damage onthe 30 yr arch. shingle as well as siding, fascia and gutter damage. The building right next store to it, owned by the same company has a dark blended color roof that seems to lack damage to roof. There is obvious damage to siding, fascia gutters, a/c units, etc. and is about 300 squares. I went back recently in the evening time and noticed hail on one of the many slopes. What may not show up in an early morning sun can often show itself in the evening sunlight.
